Teach Kids to Write

I love studying story structure. I love it because there is no end to the depth of it. Every single time you might think you’ve learned it all, you find a new angle, new theory. And when you do, it casts a brand new light on everything you already knew.

The superhero story structure is an excellent vehicle through which to introduce storytelling methods to young readers. Conflict, backstory, protagonist, antagonist…those are all elements that can make for dynamic storytelling. And writing about superheroes is something budding authors can easily get excited about.

Invent Your Own Superhero is structured like a journal, full of prompts to guide students through writing their first superhero story.

The deluxe version of Invent Your Own Superhero includes “The Adventures of Super Susan,” a superhero I invented myself when I was a young author (complete with cover illustration). Her super power is kindness!
