The Funny Thing Is…

In 2020, in the midst of the pandemic, I sat down to write a humor collection. More than anything, I thought, we all needed to laugh.

Since we were on lockdown, hungry for some face-to-face interaction, I also built each short story around characters who were meeting for the first time.

I loved writing humor. I mean loved. What was supposed to be a one-time offering turned into a series.

The older I get, the more perfect strangers are willing to start talking to me out of nowhere. I’ve had so many completely hilarious interactions just standing in line. Funny You Should Mention That focuses on the stories told while residents of a small town stand in line to buy lottery tickets for a historic jackpot.

I love the oddball magic that can be found in fairy tales. I played with that here, offering a magical collection that includes a story told from the POV of a spoke in a bicycle wheel. Another features an airplane that can get you to the other side of grief, pronto. My favorite, though, is the tale of the successful man who woke up one morning and found that he was instantly (and quite literally) over the hill.
